Top 10 Must-Do Hikes in Cape Town (With Insider Local Tips)

Cape Town is one of the rare cities in the world where you can start your day by climbing a mountain with ocean views, dive into the chilly Atlantic for a refreshing swim, take a quick shower, and still arrive at your desk by 9am.

There are so many iconic summit trails with sweeping Atlantic views and hidden valley routes with waterfalls. The Mother City honestly has something for every kind of hiker.

So if you’re here for the first time or keen to explore new routes, this guide covers the 10 must-do hikes in Cape Town with insider tips, permit info, and safety advice from a local certified hiking guide.

1. Lion’s Head (Sunrise or Sunset Hike)

Perhaps the most iconic hike in Cape Town, Lion’s Head offers a 360° panorama of Table Mountain, Cape Town CBD, Camps Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Duration: 2.5 – 3.5 hours round trip

  • Difficulty: Moderate (rocky sections with ladders and chains)

  • Insider Tip: Sunrise hikes are magical.  Trail is quieter, softer light, and a sense of calm before the city wakes up. Sunset hikes are just as breath-taking. For both sunrise and sunset hikes, a headlamp is essential. For safety and fun, it’s always best to hike in a group of four or more.

2. Platteklip Gorge

This is the most direct route up Table Mountain, often described as “Cape Town’s natural stairmaster.”

  • Duration: 2.5–3 hours up

  • Difficulty: Strenuous (steep ascent, but non-technical)

  • Insider Tip: Start early in summer to avoid the midday heat. You can descend by cable car  but check if it’s running, as high winds often close it.  Download the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway App which displays the Cableway’s operational status, weather conditions and waiting time. Cable car tickets can also be purchased on webtickets

3. Skeleton Gorge

Starting in the lush Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, this route climbs through indigenous forest and riverbeds before opening onto Table Mountain’s summit plateau, that leads to a secret beach on top of table mountain.

  • Duration: 5–6 hours

  • Difficulty: Strenuous (ladders, slippery rocks, river crossing in winter)

  • Insider Tip: Best done with a guide, especially after rain when the gorge is wet. Bring a light jacket weather changes fast on the summit. The hike starts at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. SANBI members may enter the gardens for free entry tickets or alternatively tickets can be  purchased on site or online through webtickets.

4. India Venster

For adventurous spirits, this hike combines scrambling with jaw-dropping views of the city and Lion’s Head.

  • Duration: 3.5–4 hours up

  • Difficulty: Challenging (scrambling, exposure to heights)

  • Insider Tip: This hike is not recommended for solo tourists. Always go with a qualified guide who knows the route and can get you safely to the summit. Once at the top, you can either descend via the Table Mountain cable car or hike down the easier Platteklip Gorge trail. Never attempt to descend via India Venster — it’s steep, exposed, and unsafe on the way down.

5. Kasteelspoort & the Diving Board

A local favorite, this route climbs the Camps Bay side of Table Mountain to the famous “Diving Board” rock — one of the most Instagrammed spots in Cape Town.

  • Duration: 4–5 hours return

  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging

  • Insider Tip: Combine this hike with a visit to the hidden Tranquility Cracks, a labyrinth of sandstone caves.

7. Chapman’s Peak Trail

This coastal gem offers panoramic views of Hout Bay and Noordhoek Beach.

  • Duration: 3–4 hours

  • Difficulty: Moderate (gradual inclines, rocky terrain)

  • Insider Tip: It’s a fantastic option if you’re after dramatic views without the challenge of a technical climb, making it especially suitable for families with older kids. When arriving at the toll gates, ask for a day pass; this usually gives you free entry to drive through to the trailhead and helps you avoid paying toll fees. Just be sure to check ahead whether the road is open, as it is occasionally closed if the weather is bad or if there have been rock falls on the road.

8. Jonkershoek & Stellenbosch Waterfalls

Set in the Cape Winelands, these hikes mix fynbos-covered slopes with refreshing waterfalls.

  • Duration: 3 – 6 hours (depending on the trail)

  • Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous (depending on the trail)

  • Permit Required: Yes, tickets can be purchased at the entrance of the Jonkershoek’s Nature reserve.
  • Insider Tip: Perfect to pair with a visit to the popular Route 44 Market after your hike, Jonkershoek offers trails for all levels. The path leading to the first and second waterfalls is especially beautiful if you’re looking for a shorter, more relaxed route. For those after something more challenging, the Panorama Trail delivers a strenuous climb with truly rewarding views.

Top Tip: Check the reserve’s seasonal opening times and plan to arrive 30–60 minutes before gates open. Only 20 cars are allowed inside the reserve at a time. If you miss a vehicle spot, you’ll need to walk to the trailhead — which adds an extra 10 km (out and back) to your hike.
