We recommend this hike for ages 12+. However, if your child is fit and experienced, we’re happy to assess individually — just reach out before booking.
It’s an easier route in comparison to Lion’s Head, with no technical bouldering. If you’re moderately active, you’ll be fine. We go at your pace and take breaks.
Yes! We hike the same route back
We constantly monitor conditions and may adjust your hike or reschedule if needed.
Yes, for those with reasonable fitness. No exposure to heights makes it a great family-friendly option.
Chapman’s Peak Drive is a toll road, but you can enter for free using a Day Pass if you’re accessing the hike via the Hout Bay entrance.
Free Entry with a Day Pass:
The start of the Chapman’s Peak hike lies just before the toll boom at the Day Pass Control Point. When entering from Hout Bay, you can request a free Day Pass (also called a Picnic Voucher) — this allows you to access the designated viewing spots, picnic areas, and the start of the mountain trail without paying toll fees.
Day Pass Hours:
Summer (Oct–Mar): 06:00 – 20:00
Winter (Apr–Sep): 07:00 – 18:30
Make sure you return via the Hout Bay side before the Day Pass cut-off time. If you exit after this time or lose your pass, you’ll be charged the full toll fee.
Important Note for Sunset Hikes:
If your hike runs into the evening (especially in summer), you may return after the Day Pass window closes. In that case, you’ll be charged the toll fee on your way out. We’ll always brief you on this before the hike so you’re prepared.
The Chapman’s Peak Drive may occasionally close due to wind, rockfalls, or maintenance. We monitor conditions closely, and if needed, we’ll:
Reschedule your hike, or
Offer an alternative hiking route nearby.
If the weather is unsafe (e.g. wind, storm), we’ll:
Reschedule your hike
Or offer a full refund (for direct bookings)
🌧 Light drizzle? We usually still hike — sometimes the mist makes it even more magical. Check out the weather here
