Lush forests, flowing water, wooden ladders, and one of the most iconic ascents in Cape Town.
Discover one of Table Mountain’s most enchanting and dramatic routes: the Skeleton Gorge Trail, starting in the world-famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. This trail is a favourite among hikers who love forest shade, waterfalls, scrambling, and the thrill of climbing deep into the heart of Table Mountain.
If you’re looking for a guided Skeleton Gorge experience that’s safe, scenic, and full of adventure, you’re in the right place.
Skeleton Gorge is a route that feels alive — mossy rocks, ancient trees, running water, and shaded pathways that gradually open into breathtaking mountain views. With a certified local guide, you’ll move safely through the forest, navigate the ladders and rock steps, and learn about the plants and fynbos unique to this part of Table Mountain.
This route is perfect for hikers who enjoy variety: forest walking, scrambling, waterfalls, panoramic viewpoints, and a surprise mountain dam at the top.
Distance: ±6.5 km
Duration: 4.5–6 hours
Elevation Gain: ±900 m
Difficulty: Moderate to hard (steep, sustained climbing; ladders; uneven terrain)
Start: Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
Finish: Table Mountain summit plateau (options available)
Unlike the rocky, exposed slopes found on many Table Mountain routes, Skeleton Gorge begins under a canopy of indigenous forest — cool, green, and full of life.
After rainfall, water trickles and flows along the route, adding a magical soundtrack to the climb.
These sections are fun, adventurous, and iconic to the Skeleton Gorge experience. Your guide will help you navigate safely.
One of the most memorable parts of the hike is reaching the famous mountain dam — a peaceful, surreal setting and a refreshing spot for a dip in summer.
Most hikers descend via Nursery Ravine, forming a loop back to Kirstenbosch.
If you prefer to continue across the plateau towards Maclear’s Beacon or the Cableway, we can tailor the experience (additional fee may apply).
