Easy Hikes in Cape Town for Beginners

New to hiking, or visiting Cape Town and not sure how fit you need to be? Good news: you don’t need to be an athlete to stand on a Cape Town mountain. With the right route, a steady pace and a guide who knows when to take a breather, most reasonably active people can do it.

Here are the best hikes in Cape Town for beginners, ranked from easiest, by the guides who lead them every week.

1. Kloof Corner: the easiest Table Mountain hike

Kloof Corner is the hike we recommend most for first-timers. It’s about 3.9 km return and takes 2.5–3 hours, starting from Tafelberg Road. You climb gradually to a viewpoint on the edge of Table Mountain with Lion’s Head, Camps Bay and the Atlantic right in front of you. You can do it as a morning hike or a sunset hike.

Good for: first hikes, families with teens, anyone short on time.

2. Lion’s Head: the classic, with a little adventure

Lion’s Head (669 m) is about 4.3 km and 3–3.5 hours. Most of the path spirals gently around the mountain, then the last section has chains and short ladders. Plenty of beginners do it: take it slowly and let your guide show you each step. It’s the best sunrise or sunset hike in Cape Town.

Good for: beginners who are comfortable with a bit of height and want the famous view.

3. Chapman’s Peak: steady climb, huge ocean views

Chapman’s Peak is about 6 km return and 3–4 hours, starting on Chapman’s Peak Drive above Hout Bay. The climb is steady rather than steep, with no scrambling, and the views over Hout Bay and Noordhoek beach are incredible.

Good for: beginners with reasonable fitness who prefer no chains or ladders.

Ready for a step up?

Once you’ve done one of the hikes above, try Platteklip Gorge to reach the top of Table Mountain. It’s steep and long but has no scrambling. Save India Venster for when you’re confident with heights and scrambling.

Tips for your first Cape Town hike

  • Go early or late. Mornings and late afternoons are cooler and the light is better.
  • Wear shoes with grip. Trail shoes or sturdy trainers are fine; avoid smooth-soled fashion sneakers.
  • Bring more water than you think, at least 1–1.5 litres, plus a snack and a light jacket.
  • Don’t hike alone on your first time. A guide handles route-finding, pace and safety, and you’ll learn a lot about the mountain on the way.
  • Tell your guide how you feel. Going slower is never a problem.
